I am a figurative artist painting landscapes, townscapes, marine and industrial subjects, and wildlife in watercolours, oils and acrylics.

I am self-taught and have been painting professionally for 40 years specialising at first in watercolours and then developing a bolder colour and style in oils and acrylics after Summer School at the Slade.

I have exhibited in the Royal Society of Marine Artists Open Exhibitions and in Cumbria and other open exhibitions, selling both nationally and internationally. I was one time Chairman of the Yorkshire Watercolour Society with works on show in the House of Commons amongst many other venues.

My subject matters vary widely from the mountains, Lakes, Dales and fells to farms and suburban gardens, from cities to the sea, to cars, to mines and old industrial sites, and the natural world. Basically wherever I see a picture.

I came from a Cumbrian family but my early career as a mining engineer took me on international travels particularly Canada , New Zealand and Europe, and some of my work remains influenced by those travels. I am now living and working by Appleby Castle having lived high on the Cumbrian Fellside for a number of years and more recently on the Suffolk Norfolk border, bringing light and big skies into my work.

I also publish a range of my own reproductions of paintings, mostly of the Yorkshire Dales.
