GREEN DOOR AT THE BREWHOUSE

Local artists group moves in at Burgundy’s

Green Door, the Cumbrian artists’ co-operative, has a new gallery space – in the smart, newly-opened ‘Brewhouse’ at Burgundy’s Wine Bar on Lowther Street, Kendal.

Since relocating the artists whose Highgate studios were destroyed by fire in 2010, Green Door has focused on providing networking, exhibitions and marketing opportunities for its members – now up
to 99.

The organisation has updated its brand and relaunched the Green Door website; it’s also been pro-actively seeking gallery space to present members’ artwork – so the offer from Burgundy’s proprietor, Mike Pennington, came at the right time.

Mike Pennington said:

“I really support the efforts of contemporary artists and photographers in the area; having art in The Brewhouse enhances the atmosphere, especially on Thursday’s jazz nights. By giving space to Green Door, I’m hoping it might encourage up-and-coming young artists to have a solo exhibition for the first time.”

The nature and size of the space lends itself to solo rather than group exhibitions – and wall-hung rather than 3D work. Karen Lloyd has taken the first slot and her exhibition of recent paintings runs until the end of December.

Green Door’s Administrator, Elizabeth Eaton, said:

“This is our first dedicated gallery space in Kendal. We hope to find similar spaces throughout the region – to give more Green Door artists an opportunity to exhibit and provide more access to contemporary art for those living and visiting the area.”
